On March 21, 1963, the last prisoners left Alcatraz, marking the end of an era for the infamous island prison. Known as "The Rock," Alcatraz was home to some of America’s most notorious criminals, including Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly.
With its isolated location and treacherous waters, escape from Alcatraz seemed impossible. Yet, this didn’t deter Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, whose daring escape attempt in 1962 still fuels speculation today.
Despite its reputation, Alcatraz was expensive to maintain, costing three times as much as other prisons. The aging facility needed millions in repairs, prompting its closure.
Now a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Alcatraz attracts visitors from around the world. Its eerie history and stunning views make it a unique destination, offering a glimpse into the past while providing a safe return trip by ferry.
So, if you’re up for a day of history, mystery, and maybe a little ghost hunting, Alcatraz is calling! Just be sure to catch the last ferry back, or you might end up experiencing the "lockup" for yourself!
