In a plot that sounds more like a Hollywood blockbuster than real life, a 19-year-old Indonesian boy named Aldi Novel Adilang was rescued on August 31, 2018, after spending an astonishing 49 days adrift at sea in a floating fish trap.
Aldi's job was to mind a rompong - a floating fish trap without paddles or an engine, moored some 125 kilometers (77 miles) off the coast of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. In mid-July, heavy winds ripped his small raft from its moorings, and he drifted into the open sea.
Days turned into weeks as Aldi survived on the supplies he had, including food and fresh water. When those ran out, he had to catch fish and drink sea water filtered through his clothes. His survival skills were truly put to the test.
After 49 days at sea, Aldi's ordeal finally ended when he was spotted by the Panamanian-flagged vessel, MV Arpeggio. The crew managed to rescue the teenager and bring him to safety, marking the end of his incredible journey.
